“Say No to Single-Use Plastic Bags”
- In conjunction with World Oceans Day 2025, the Department of Fisheries Malaysia launched the “Love Our Marine Heritage” Campaign, carrying a vital message:
“Say No to Single-Use Plastic Bags” and “Take Your Trash Home”.
- This campaign is carried out across all Marine Parks in Malaysia, aiming to raise awareness among visitors and local communities about the responsibility to keep our seas clean and to sustain the nation’s marine environment.
Global Theme: Wonder – Sustaining What Sustains Us
- World Oceans Day 2025 is themed “Wonder: Sustaining what sustains us”, highlighting the importance and wonder of the ocean — a source of life that provides oxygen, sustenance, and supports millions of species on Earth.
The Ocean at a Glance
The ocean covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface. It:
- Produces at least 50% of the world’s oxygen,
- Serves as the primary habitat for global biodiversity,
- Provides a major protein source for over 1 billion people worldwide, and
- Contributes to the global economy, with an estimated 40 million jobs in ocean-based industries by 2030.
The Threat
However, the oceans are now under threat —
- Over 90% of large fish populations have been depleted, and
- 50% of coral reefs have been destroyed due to human pressure and pollution.
We are taking more from the ocean than it can replenish.
Commitments Moving Forward
- Reduce single-use plastic consumption, especially in sensitive areas like tourist islands and marine parks.
- Practice the “Take Your Trash Home” principle to prevent littering and protect marine ecosystems.
- Respect marine life and support conservation efforts for future generations.
