Message from The Director
GREETINGS AND SALAM PERAK AMAN JAYA
The Department of Fisheries Malaysia is an agency entrusted to support all government policies and aspirations to lead the country’s fisheries sector whether in the captured fisheries sector or aquaculture.
Currently, the main source of fish is from the Captured Fisheries which is 1.7 million t/m. However, to ensure a continuous supply of fish, the Department of Fisheries has identified production from aquaculture as a major contributor to further increase fish production to meet domestic demand and expand export potential. Currently, the country’s aquaculture development has shown rapid development with an average annual growth rate of 8% per annum over the past ten years. The Government continues to focus on encouraging the development of the country’s aquaculture through development programmes under the Tenth Malaysia Plan and is currently implementing the Eleventh Malaysia Plan and further realising the mission of the Department of Fisheries Malaysia by 2020 which is Policy 50:50.
To realize the mission of the Department, each fisheries member has a role and responsibility in advancing fisheries technology as well as identifying current issues or problems to be implemented for improvement.
The new target of 1.76 million metric tonnes has been made one of the key initiatives under the Agro-Food Transformation Programme to ensure that the fisheries sub-sector continues to contribute to the country’s food supply adequacy, increase the income of entrepreneurs and make the agro-food sector a competitive and sustainable business.
Thank you.
