6 March 2026

The Department of Fisheries Malaysia (DOF), together with the Wildlife Crime Bureau / Special Investigation Intelligence (WCB/PSK) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Bukit Aman, conducted an integrated enforcement operation at several ornamental fish premises along Jalan Pudu, Kuala Lumpur, aimed at curbing the sale of prohibited fish species.

The surprise inspection, which involved 42 enforcement officers, resulted in the seizure of various prohibited species such as Arapaima, Sturgeon, Peacock Bass, Pacu, and Amazon Redtail Catfish (Baung Ekor Merah). These species are identified as high-risk due to their invasive nature and the potential to disrupt local biodiversity and fish populations if released into public waters.

The total value of the seized items is estimated at RM35,674.00, and all confiscated species will be placed at the Selangor Fisheries Biosecurity Centre, KLIA for further action. The inspection also found that six premises were operating without the necessary permits and licenses for aquaculture activities.

This operation was conducted under the Fisheries Act 1985 [Act 317], Fisheries Regulations (Prohibition of Import, etc., for Fish) 1990 (Amendment 2024), Fisheries (Inland Aquaculture) Rules for W.P. Kuala Lumpur & W.P. Labuan 2017, and the International Trade in Endangered Species Act 2008 [Act 686].

The action reflects the continuous commitment of the Department of Fisheries Malaysia to strengthen law enforcement, regulate the circulation of non-native species, protect aquatic biodiversity, and ensure the sustainability of the nation’s fisheries resources.

Members of the public and business operators are advised to consult their nearest Fisheries Office before acquiring or trading foreign fish species to avoid legal action.
