Sistem Ramalan Lokasi Ikan (FSI)

THE FISHING SITES IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM – TOWARDS PRODUCTIVITY IMPROVEMENT OF THE PURSE SEINE FISHERY IN MALAYSIA

 

The Fishing Sites Identification System (FSI) was developed for the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The project was started in 2007 and completed in December 2010. The project has been undertaken collaboratively between the Department of Fisheries Malaysia (DOF), Remote Sensing Agency of Malaysia (ARSM), Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) and National Fishermen’s Association of Malaysia (NEKMAT).  The project comprises five major components, namely pelagic fish density determination from hydroacoustic surveys using KK SENANGIN II vessel and onboard sampling by 36 enumerators on selected purse seine vessels; study on sea condition from oceanographic surveys and satellite data acquisition and analyses (MODIS, OCM, NOAA and Radarsat); fish forecasting modeling as well as data distribution to the fishers. Results indicated that the level of precision was estimated around 80%.  ARSM would takes about 3 hours to produce the Potential Fishing Zones (PFZ) after the raw satelite data were received by the ground station in Temerloh Pahang. Data were processed by ARSM Headquarter in Kuala Lumpur and the potential fishing zones were disseminated through Short Messages System (SMS). More detail informations  were also published through program website that could be accessed using address http://ikan.remotesensing.gov.my/. Information dissemination and promotion to the fisher and Fishermen’s Association by area in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak were started in September 2010. Several follow-up activities were conducted in 2012, 2013 and 2014 to compile feedbacks from fishermen who using the system in order to further strengthen the forecasting.  As the results, this study has indicated purse seine operators could reduce 30% of the total operational cost and increase 20% of their net income. This project also has been awarded as the gold medal winner for AISA2014 under the ICT category.
