The Department of Fisheries Malaysia (DOF) through the Catch Fisheries Resources Division has organised the Tuna Industry Consultative Council (MPI) and Port State Measures (PSM) Capacity Building in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan. The ceremony was officiated by YBhg Dato” Haji Azahari bin Othman, Senior Director of Aquaculture.
The Tuna Industry Consultative Council (MPI) 2024 programme was held as a platform for information and sharing of views related to issues arising at the domestic and international levels to tuna vessel operators and tuna product operators as well as agencies involved in tuna vessel licensing policies and procedures, tuna fishery resource management and efforts to boost the tuna fishery industry in Malaysia.
The Tuna Industry Consultative Council (MPI) 2024 is also combined with the Port State Measures (PSM) Capacity Building Programme which is closely related to tuna fishing vessel activities on the high seas. Port State Measures is a mechanism to control the entry of foreign fishing vessels into port states to curb the entry of IUU vessels to use ports.
Eight (8) presentation papers were prepared, five (5) of which were related to Tuna Industry Development from the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, Kg. Acheh Fisheries Research Institute, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Marine Department Malaysia and Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) while three (3) of them were related to IUU and Port State Measures by officials of the Department of Fisheries Malaysia.
The MPI was attended by a total of 65 entrepreneurs and agencies from the tuna industry throughout Malaysia.
Also present at the ceremony were Tuan Haji Bakri bin Miswan, Senior Deputy Director of Capture Fisheries Resources Division, Puan Zarina binti Zainuddin, Penang State Director of Fisheries, YBhg Datuk Haji Sufian bin Sulaiman, Vice Chairman of the Malaysian Tuna Association as well as state directors and department staff.
