Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, YB Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup officiated the 21st International Institute of Fisheries Economics & Trade (IIFET) conference, organised by WorldFish and the Department of Fisheries Malaysia (DOF) at the St. Giles Wembley Hotel, Penang.
This biennial conference, held in Asia for the first time since 2008, brings together global experts to discuss “Aquatic Food Systems in the Blue Economy.” The conference took place from 15 to 19 July 2024 and also focused on the fisheries, aquaculture and trade economic sectors including food security sustainability, increasing economic and social equality.
The conference is an important platform for information sharing and forging collaborations in shaping the future of food security in the blue economy.
DOF plays an important role in enhancing the aquaculture sector to meet the goals of the blue economy through the Support Service Delivery System (SPeKS) 2024 programme, which has benefited 307 aquaculture operators worth RM7.5 million aimed at increasing aquaculture production through the empowerment of orchard operators in ensuring the sustainability of the industry and contributing to the blue economy.
