21 August 2024

The Department of Fisheries Malaysia (DOF) through the Catch Fisheries Resources Division has organised the Deep Sea Industry Consultative Council (MPI) in Kuantan, Pahang. The ceremony was officiated by Dato’ Haji Adnan bin Hussain, Director General of Fisheries Malaysia.

This MPI was attended by deep-sea industry players, especially involving C2 vessels from all over Malaysia. A total of 5 papers were presented at this MPI.

The ceremony continued with the launch of the Vessel Identification System (SIV) through QR code scanning technology (Quick Response Code) installed on the Deep Sea Fishing vessel (Zone C2). The SIV was developed by DOF in 2020 to determine the purity of local vessels at a cost of RM602,500 and will be extended until 2024 with improvements in terms of durability and durable safety design against changes in weather and the marine environment.

The launch of the SIV assists DOF in combating Illegal, Unreported & Unregulated (IUU) fisheries in Malaysia such as the issue of cloning local vessels and the leakage of fishery resources to neighbouring countries. This is evidenced by the arrest case that occurred in January 2022 in Thailand involving five local vessels detained by the authorities in the country, where the identification of the four local fishing vessels was identified by the DOF and confirmed through the QR Code plates installed on the vessels.

Director General of Fisheries Malaysia, Dato’ Haji Adnan bin Hussain said DOF will make the installation and implementation of QR Codes mandatory on all Zone C2 vessels starting in 2026 and subsequently will be applied to Zone C fishing vessels

Also present at the programme were Tuan Haji Wan Muhammad Aznan bin Abdullah, Deputy Director General of Fisheries (Management), Mr. Abdullah Bin Jaafar, Pahang State Director of Fisheries, as well as state directors and department staff.
